The Land and Water Conservation Fund is a federal program that was created in 1965 to support the nation’s public outdoor recreation areas. In order to receive federal funding, sponsors must agree that the project site will be maintained for public outdoor recreation in perpetuity, and must comply with site inspections at least once every five years. Volunteers assist with these inspections, which require driving to project sites, walking, hiking, or biking the encumbered area, completion of forms and photography of the area.
