Campground Host

Description:

Cheyenne Mountain lies nestled at the base of its namesake, which provides a stunning backdrop to the campground. The park offers a remote location atmosphere, but is only minutes to nearby shopping in downtown Colorado Springs. In 45 minutes or less you can reach popular attractions like the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Garden of the Gods, and Pikes Peak.

Volunteer Campground Hosts are an important liaison between park visitors and park staff. Responsibilities are varied and may include some or all of the following:

  • Provide excellent customer service through direct interaction with park visitors.
  • Reside on park to assist with after-hour situations and report any issues/safety hazards to rangers immediately.
  • Complete daily site reservation checks (morning and noon).
  • Assist in operation of the entrance station and light maintenance including bathroom checks and minor cleaning when maintenance is unavailable.
  • Sell firewood.
  • Provide logistical help with special events and educational programs as needed.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned and agreed upon.

Successful hosts are willing and able to clean campsites, cabins, restrooms; answer visitor questions; help run park entrance gate; and are friendly and willing to work with a wide variety of people. Prior camp host experience and knowledge of IPAWS software are preferred but not required.

Site elevation: 6,300 ft.

Looking for three hosts for the 2024 season. Folks who are solo, pairs, families with children, and those working remotely are welcome to apply. Hosts are permitted to have pets, but please note that a lot of our hiking trails and sections of the park do not allow pets.

Time Commitment:

20-30 hours per week per person, April - October

Minimum time commitment: 3 months

Desired time commitment: 5-6 months

Volunteer Benefits:

Amenities:

Enjoy full service campsites with electric, water and sewer hookups. Cell service is strong, and hosts are allowed to utilize computers and internet at the office. Certain host sites have a trailer size limitation of 26-28 feet, trailers and Class C's are generally okay, but low profile vehicles and 5th wheels will not fit into the site.

Other Benefits:

Situated just south of Colorado Springs and considered one of the "crown jewels" in Colorado's extensive state park system, Cheyenne Mountain State Park represents the protection of one of the last significant open spaces along the southern section of the Colorado Front Range.

The 2,701 acres of the park lie beneath the eastern flank of Cheyenne Mountain, and border the plains of Colorado in a stunning transition from plains to peaks. The land is in remarkable natural condition and diverse wildlife viewing opportunities abound due to the property's relatively undisturbed and unfragmented nature.

Cheyenne Mountain offers superior facilities and recreational opportunities. Foremost among the park's offerings is the trail system consisting of 28 miles of hiking and biking trails. These pathways allow visitors ample opportunities to explore the park's natural beauty and discover the park's many wild inhabitants.

The park is close to Colorado Springs and all the military bases but just far enough away from the city for peace and quiet. Fort Carson's bugle calls and evening taps can be heard from the campground.
